Do not respond to “Notice” e-mail scam

Another phishing scam (shown below) is going around. Just like every other message of this type, this one is not from SNC. It was in the spam quarantine because it is spam. As always, you should never respond to these types of messages. They are never legitimate. No one who works at St. Norbert College will ever ask you for your password, and we do not send out messages like this. If you ever have any doubts about any message you receive, contact the Help Desk before responding.

If you have responded to this message, contact the Help Desk immediately.

For more information about phishing scams, see http://www.snc.edu/go/phishing.

Computers infected with DNSChanger will lose Internet access on July 9th

An estimated 500,000 computers worldwide are infected with malware (spyware) called “DNSChanger.” DNSChanger modifies the DNS settings on computers and routers, causing them to use malicious servers that redirect you to fake and potentially dangerous web sites.

Last November, the FBI arrested the people who ran the operation, seized the malicious servers, and temporarily put up surrogate servers in place of the malicious ones so that infected computers could continue to access the Internet. On July 9, 2012, the government will remove those temporary servers, at which time any computers that are still infected will lose Internet access.

Are you infected?

We strongly recommend checking your home computers to make sure that they’re not infected with the DNSChanger malware. Fortunately it’s easy to check if a computer is infected simply by visiting one of these web sites:
http://security.ucla.edu/dnschanger/
http://dns-ok.us/

Google is attempting to notify people as well if their computers are infected. If you visit Google and see the notice shown in the following link, then your computer is infected:
http://googleonlinesecurity.blogspot.com/2012/05/notifying-users-affected-by-dnschanger.html

If your computer is infected with DNSChanger, see the following site for removal instructions and links to several removal tools:

Spyware masquerades as SMART HDD hard drive utility

If a “SMART HDD” window pops up your screen indicating that there are problems with your hard drive, STOP and call the Help Desk immediately. This program is spyware and could seriously damage your computer. If the Help Desk is not available, turn your computer off by holding in the power button until it shuts down, and do not use it until Tech Support examines it.

For more information and a picture of what the program looks like, see http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-smart-hdd.

Printing problems resolved

We believe that all of yesterday’s printing problems have been resolved. If the printer in your area was updated yesterday, you will need to reset your print PINs. For instructions, see: http://www.snc.edu/techsupport/docs/printpins.html

Also, Windows users may need to reset their default printer. To do so, go to Start — Settings — Printers and Faxes (Windows XP) or Start — Devices and Printers (Windows 7). Right-click on the printer you wish to set as the default and choose “Set as default printer.”

If you are still having problems printing or logging in to MFPs/copiers, please contact the Help Desk and let us know exactly what problem you are having with which printers/MFPs.

Barracuda anti-spam server update

Since last week’s upgrade to the Barracuda anti-spam server, there have been some issues related to logging in to the spam quarantine. When clicking the links in the Spam Quarantine Summary e-mails, you should be taken directly into your quarantine, but the current problem sometimes causes it to send you to a login page instead. Our IT department is working with the vendor to straighten that out.

In the meantime, if you are prompted to log in when accessing your spam quarantine, or if you wish to go to http://www.snc.edu/antispam and log in at any time, you can do so using your full SNC e-mail address (e.g., donald.duck@snc.edu) and your Barracuda password. If you don’t know your Barracuda password, you can follow the steps below to have the system send it to you and then change it if desired. Note that this password will be used only for the anti-spam server, and for security purposes, you should not set it to be the same as your SNC network/e-mail password. To acquire and/or reset your Barracuda password:

1. Go to http://www.snc.edu/antispam.
2. Enter your full SNC e-mail address in the Username field (e.g., john.doe@snc.edu) and click the “Create New Password” button.
3. Check your e-mail for a new message from the anti-spam server. The “Password:” line of that message should contain your current Barracuda password. If you plan to change your password, highlight and copy the current password.
4. Click on the link at the bottom of that message. This will take you into the anti-spam server.
5. On the anti-spam server screen, click the Preferences tab at the top.
6. Below the Preferences tab in the dark blue boxes, click on Password.
7. In the “Old Password” box, paste or type your current Barracuda password from the e-mail message in step 3.
8. In the “New Password” and “Re-Type New Password” boxes, enter a new password. Note that this password will be used only for the anti-spam server.
9. Click the Save Password button.

After doing this, you will be able to log in to the anti-spam server by going to http://www.snc.edu/antispam and using your full SNC e-mail address as your Username, along with the new password you just created.

As always, if you have any questions, contact the Help Desk.

Anti-spam server upgrade

The College’s anti-spam server will be upgraded on Wednesday, March 28th at 5:30 p.m. This upgrade is not expected to take long and should be done well within the maintenance period (by 8:00 p.m.). During this time, the anti-spam server will be unavailable and e-mail coming in to campus may be briefly delayed.

Important: In preparation for this upgrade, we will be adjusting the settings on the anti-spam server on Wednesday, March 21st. Because the quarantined mail cannot be transferred from the old server to the new server, for one week prior to the upgrade, the anti-spam server will not quarantine any messages. Messages that would normally be quarantined will instead be allowed through to your inbox. This means that you will receive somewhat more spam than usual during this time. Messages that are blocked by the anti-spam server will continue to be blocked.

Again, from March 21st through March 28th, you will receive more spam than usual. Just delete these spam messages as you normally would, and remain on alert for phishing scams. As soon as the anti-spam server upgrade is complete on the 28th, suspected spam messages will go back to being quarantined as they always have.

As always, if you have any questions, contact the Help Desk.

Printing updates

Faculty & staff:

Last week the Equitrac print accounting system was upgraded. A new version of the Equitrac software is being installed on all of the necessary campus computers. Public computers that students use have already been updated. Computers that students use in offices are still being updated. If your student employees cannot print, please notify us by replying to this message.

Most of the campus multi-function printers (MFPs) also need to be updated. This is being done one department/area at a time. Employee computers will only need to be updated if they have the Equitrac billing client (the pop-up screen that asks for your account number). These updates will be done after the printer in each area is updated.

Students:

Last week the Equitrac print accounting system was upgraded. A new version of the Equitrac software was installed on all of the public campus computers and most of the computers that students use in offices. If you cannot print in a campus office where you work, please have your supervisor notify us.

Due to these updates, anyone using a print PIN will need to create a new one. You only need to do this if you wish to use a PIN to log in to the campus multi-function printers (MFPs) and copiers. To do so:

1. Go to: http://www.snc.edu/printpins
2. Log in with your 6-character network login ID and password.
3. Click on “Manage my user PINs.”
4. Check the “Change PIN1″ box.
5. In the “New PIN1″ box, enter a new PIN1, which is your username for the printer system.
6. Check the “Change PIN2″ box.
7. Leave the “Current PIN2″ blank.
8. In the “New PIN2″ box, enter a new PIN2, which is your password for the printer system.
9. In the “Confirm PIN2″ box, enter your new PIN2 again.
10. Click the Change PIN button.

As always, if you have any questions, contact the Help Desk.
