About Dr. Southworth

In the SNC Education Program, I serve as an educator, mentor, and guide for pre-service teachers seeking license certification in grades PreK-12. Using my previous experience as a full-service teacher in various school districts in Wisconsin, I stress and model educational pedagogies that deviate from rote learning and I believe strongly in cultivating culturally responsive educators who are reflective practitioners.  Ideally, pre-service teachers who achieve these outcomes prior to graduation will not only “survive” their first year as a full-service teacher, but also thrive as an effective educator.

Currently my research interests focus on using content analysis to examine women’s agency in textbooks, religion, and folktales used in secondary social studies classrooms as well as the use of IHMC CmapTools software to promote gender-balanced social studies curriculum.
