Being a Green Bay native, it has always been my dream to attend St. Norbert College. Now I am a third-year student majoring in Communications with a Communications emphasis and minoring in Graphic Design. In May 2007, I began an internship in the Office of Communications. I chose to apply for this job because it sounded like the perfect opportunity for me to pursue my lifelong interests of writing and the media, as well as to put a variety of journalistic and design skills to good use. The purpose of this online journal is to give you a glimpse into the life of an intern in the Office of Communications at St. Norbert College. It is intended to be both informative and helpful for you, whether you are a first-year student wondering what exactly an internship is and what it is that an intern does, an upperclassman who is a fellow intern interested in learning what this particular job is like, or anyone in between. I am thrilled to have the valuable opportunity to share this roller-coaster of an experience online with you. Enjoy, and thanks for reading!

Intern Tip #1: Start work as soon as possible.

This summer I took three classes at St. Norbert. During this time I also had the valuable opportunity to start work as an intern in the Office of Communications.

May was “a great time to jump in,” as my supervisors said, because the campus would be quieter and projects would be slower-paced than they are during term time.

They were right – it definitely was a learning experience.

In addition to being trained to perform basic office tasks, I had my first opportunity to contribute to the production process of the St. Norbert College Magazine, which is published through the Communications office. I was thrilled to see my name printed in the summer 2007 issue of the magazine!

I was also asked to participate in the Knights on the Fox summer concert series. I had heard of this St. Norbert alumni event before, but I never imagined the amount of planning, work, preparation and time that the Office of Communications put into organizing it!

Since the academic year began in August, the Office of Communications has been extremely busy. Consequently, so has my life as an intern. I am quickly finding out that work during the summer months is, indeed, very different from work during the academic year.

This fall, the office has been abuzz with projects, there are several different interns to collaborate with and my supervisors are more occupied with less time to monitor my work. I have spent much of my time keeping up with deadlines and teaching my co-workers what I learned this summer. I am still getting used to the new fast-paced atmosphere in the office and working with so many other students around, both in the office and on campus!

I definitely think it is beneficial to start work as an intern as soon as possible. I feel so fortunate that I had the opportunity to get started this summer, when there was more time to “learn the ropes” and the atmosphere was less stressful!
