Greetings everyone! My name is Audrey O'Hern, and welcome to my "blog." I am currently a Junior here at St. Norbert college and work for the Leadership Service and Involvement office as the Service Events Intern. Right now I am pursuing a double major in Graphic Design and Communicatons (both of which I love studying!). I also hold the office of Public Relations in the student organization Friends for Wheels! I currently reside with my parents Mark and Peggy O'Hern in Door County (which is located in the "thumb" of Wisconsin!), which is just a quick trip of 45 minutes. Within the short time I have spent at St. Norbert College I have been able to find a place that I really feel like I belong. It is in my hopes that all members who contribute to the St. Norbert College Community feel the same way too! Thanks for checking out what I have to say! Hope to meet you soon!

A Sunny Start to the Week!

02/24/08 at 04:03:14 pm

First of all, I have to note how beautiful it is outside!! This certainly creates a lighter mood, no matter how much work needs to get done!

Whew!! What a busy couple of weeks it has been! So let me see, where did we leave off last time...

PORTFOLIO:

So I met with Father Neilson and received a great deal of information from Professor Pirman in regards to what needs to be done to create a portfolio! Since I had never made one before, it was definitley 'overwhelming' in the sense that I want to do it right! I have a tendency to want to do things right the first time, which is nearly impossible to do!! That is a really good way to stress myself out!!

For this portfolio, I am going to create it electronically, which means that all of my work, application and resume will be placed onto a cd so that my employer will just look at it on the computer. This is really nice considering I won't have to pay to make prints or for a portfolio case! The application/portfolio is due this Friday for the Graphic Design Intern position at the LSI office. I will be handing it in on Wednesday, just to make sure that I am not waiting until the last minute to get it done!!

I am also deciding whether or not I want to continue my education after St. Norbert College. It is a really hard decision right now considering I don't even know what kind of professional career I want to pursue. I guess going to school after SNC would give me more time to figure that out, but the idea of doing more homework is kind of a setback. I think that is something that I really need to discuss more with my advisor and my parents.

CLASS:

Last week was CRZAY!! I had two tests (Business and Prof. Speaking and Family Comm), which really doesn't sound too bad, but they were Wednesday and Thursday and we didn't get a study guide to follow! AAHH!! I started studying for each test like 1 1/2 weeks before! I know it sounds ridiculous, but I should warn you all right away that I try very hard to do many things long before the due date. I feel that this way I don't wait until the last minute and panic! I will admit though, that I really like not having a study guide to follow in order to prepare for the tests. Granted, I ended up covering more information than what I was tested on, but I find I learn A LOT MORE!

Also for Business and Professional Speaking, we handed in a resume and cover letter Friday! It was great practice for when I apply for a professional position in the future! We are now getting ready to prepare 8-10 minute presentations that relates to our major/minor. As a graphic design major, I am going to present information on Paul Rand, one of my favorite graphic designers! So far this class has provided me with a great deal of invaluable information that can all be applied to life after college! I think students should be required to take that class, especially since they are taught to fashion a 'notable' resume. If not, definitely take advantage of all the advice that is offered by Career Services, everyone there is so nice and very supportive of all student endeavors!

Well, that is pretty much the update on me lately. The majority of my time has gone towards schoolwork and work at the LSI office! Next time I will be sure to give you an update on what is happening with 100 Men Who Cook and current art projects for Ad. Design and Clay and Metals!

Thank you for checking in on my blog! Hope you had a relaxing weekend and are ready for the week, enjoy the sun!

My Very First Blog!!

02/07/08 at 09:47:09 pm

Hello Everyone!! Welcome to my first entry!! Just to warn you all, this is my first time ever participating in the "act of blogging." I am really excited to be able to try this new opportunity! It gives me a chance to not only get to know others who share their lives through their blogs, but it also give me the courage to express myself to all of you who are interested in reading what I have to say!!

I thought that I would take this time to just introduce myself! I am currently a junior at St. Norbert College pursuing a double major in Graphic Design and Communication. (I originally said Communication's,' when Professor Hutchinson corrected me and said "you are only in one communication major.") You learn something new everyday!! I enjoy various activities such as reading, creating various art projects, singing while driving in my car (this way nobody hears me), hanging out with friends, snuggling, and pretty much anything that I can do outside.

I was born and currently reside in Door County, WI. I have met more people here who only know of the place because they either have a summer home up there or vacation up there each summer with family. It is funny how that works, but it never ceases to amaze me how we are all connected in some way or another!

So, let's get on with the semester!

The classes I am taking include Clay and Metals (Major), Business and Professional Speaking (Major), Advertising Design (Major), and Family Communication (Major). Academically, this is going to be the most challenging semester. We are only in the third week and I can feel the semester taking a full swing in a new direction. I am up for the challenge though!! Where would the sense of accomplishment be if I knew I didn't work hard for it!

I am also working as the Service Events Intern for the Leadership, Service and Involvement Office. This is the first internship I have ever had and I am loving it!! With this internship, I feel so much more involved and connected with the events that occur on campus! (I don't know about you, but I always like to know what is going on around me!) It has allowed for me to feel a greater sense of independence and confidence in my work abilities, and it has also taught me the values of working with members in a team, that doesn't involve a sport. I hope that everyone takes advantage of an internship opportunity before they graduate!

Right now I am in the middle of trying to decide what type of job I should apply for the summer and upcoming school year. I have to finish up my resume and create a portfolio for all of my artwork! I have never put one together before, so I do not know what direction to head first! I will be sure to let you know how my portfolio turns out and what I had to do in order to assemble it!

Until then, stay warm and best of luck with your classwork!!

Talk to you again soon!
